In C.S. Lewis' book The Screwtape Letters, even the devil Screwtape knows what we nearly always forget: that God is out to make people happy. He has made us with the capacity to enjoy far greater pleasures than the ones we usually content ourselves with, if only we will trust the guidance He gives. Even His calls to self-control, self-sacrifice, worship and obedience are just clever ways to help people feel greater and greater pleasure. As Screwtape explains, begrudgingly but truthfully:
"God is a hedonist at heart. All those fast and vigils and stakes and crosses are only a facade. Or only like foam on the sea shore. Out at sea, out in His sea, there is pleasure and more pleasure. He makes no secret of it; at His right hand are 'Pleasures forevermore'...He has filled the world full of pleasures."
